What a failing valve feels like from the knob
Three complaints, in the order they reach us. The knob spins freely and the flame ignores where it is put. The knob is stiff enough that you brace a hand on the range to move it. Or the flame holds one height wherever the knob goes — usually full, occasionally nothing between off and open.
All three are one component: a brass body on the manifold metering gas as its stem turns, sealed by grease meant to last decades and occasionally not.
What else gets looked at while it is open
Reaching a valve puts the knobs off and the fascia away, bringing the whole burner row into view for the first time in years. So the electrode leads running past it are checked, with the orifice serving that burner and the fasteners on the manifold — those being what would otherwise bring somebody back out.
Where a job lands inside the band
Which end of the second band you finish at depends on how many valves are going and how the range is built in. One valve on a standard-depth range sits low. Three on a wide professional range set tight into stone sits high: the appliance has to come forward and go back, and that is most of the hour.
