Why the space under the counter comes first
Controls printed under glass sit directly over their own electronics, and electronics in a closed box with nowhere to send warm air turn unreliable long before they turn dead. A top installed over a drawer stack, boxed in above an oven, or sharing a cabinet that has since been filled with storage will fault, recover, and fault again — the signature of heat rather than of failure. Freeing that space, where it can be freed, is checked before a part is ordered.
Spills, cloths, and the pan across the strip
The other cheap answers are on the surface. A film of oil over the control area. A damp cloth left lying across it. A pan pushed far enough back that its base covers a key, so the control reads a finger that is not there. Water that has run under the trim will do it too. None of these is a part, and every one of them imitates one.
What replacing the assembly involves
When the control itself has gone, the fiddly part is not the swap. The top has to be released from the counter, which on a stone slab is rarely as simple as lifting it out, and the new assembly is fitted and then proved zone by zone before anything is bedded back down. Kitchens remodelled around a single slab — common enough in Beverly Hills and Calabasas — are the slow version of that, and it is where most of this band goes.
