Three complaints, three different answers
A crack is structural, it travels further with every heat cycle, and it takes the appliance out of use until the pane is renewed. Crazing — the fine network of lines that appears after years of heat — is often the surface treatment rather than the glass beneath, and it is judged in front of you. Haze or specks behind the outer layer mean something has reached a space meant to stay closed; whether that is cleaned or renewed depends on how the door is built.
Why the door comes off to the bench
Either way the door leaves the appliance. The panes sit in a frame under the seal and the trim, the fixings are out of reach while the door hangs, and glass under tension is not something to unbolt at arm’s length over a hard floor. Putting it back matters as much as the part: a pane bedded unevenly returns as a rattle, or as a fresh crack.
What decides where it lands
Inside the band the variables are how far the door is stripped and what is renewed alongside the glass — trim, clips, the seal that beds against the frame. A pane that broke from a knock is a shorter job than one that broke because the door was closing out of square, where the hinge side is put right in the same visit.
